Verruca needling is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat verrucae (warts on the feet) caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that haven’t responded to other treatments like freezing (cryotherapy) or acid (chemical cauterisation).
It involves using a fine sterile needle to puncture the verruca many times, under local anaesthetic. This helps trigger your immune system to recognise and fight off the virus that causes the wart.
Verruca needling has a success rate of approximately 69% to 70% six months after the procedure, making it a highly effective treatment option for persistent verrucae.
This is higher than many traditional treatment options, such as cryotherapy and acid-based treatments, which often have lower success rates.
Cryotherapy, for example has a success rate typically between 30% to 50%.
This makes needling a preferred option for patients who have not responded well to other treatments, and a promising treatment option for those seeking effective solutions for persistent warts.
Verruca needling is not suitable for some people.
